Here are Holland America's 1997 offerings from which to choose your unforgettable Hawaiian holiday.

Hawaii Discovery Cruises
Combine air travel with a one-way cruise and two days on the beach in Waikiki on a Hawaii Discovery CruiseTour. Choose a 10-day cruisetour to or from San Diego, or 13 days to or from Vancouver, B.C.
Your Ship Is Your Own Enchanted Island
As delightful and captivating as the islands you'll be visiting, the ms Statendam is a gem of perfection among the newest generation of Holland America ships. Resplendent in priceless art and treasured antiques from stem to stern, she is a vibrant isle at sea. You'll sip refreshments in the atrium, entertained by the dancing waters of a magnificent fountain. A grand sweeping staircase ascends a two-tiered dining room, topped with a Venetian glass canopy. There are quiet lounges in which to retreat, delightful bars where you'll celebrate the evenings, and a jogging track and swimming pools for your recreation. And surrounding your private island are endless miles of gleaming decks upon which to bask in the tropical sun and watch the ever-changing panorama.
For the fourth consecutive year, Holland America Line has been named "Best Overall Cruise Value" by the people who know cruising best: the experienced cruisers who make up the World Ocean and Cruise Liner Society. Their newsletter, Ocean & Cruise News, summed up the award as follows: 'Holland America Line continues to be the cruise line that sets the standard for value in the cruise industry." -...Holland America consistently presents more to passengers than they expected.' -...with numerous small touches that are either overlooked by other cruise lines, or have been eliminated due to cost-cutting..."
The Service Is Magical
When was the last time your needs and desires were not just attended to, but anticipated? A fresh towel is always there. And extra dessert comes to you table as if summoned by your eyes, and breakfast-in-bed arrives precisely when you want it.
The Dining Is Unsurpassed
When was the last time you feasted on fresh fare from around the world? When dinner arrived on Rosenthal china and you could choose from a bountiful breakfast buffet that awaited you every morning? Holland America Line's chefs present the most extensive menus at sea. And you are our guest of honor.
The People Are A World Apart
When was the last time a white-gloved steward greeted you for your holiday while a string quartet played gentle melodies? When you entered a lounge and were greeted by your name and presented with your favorite drink? For years, our renowned Indonesian and Filipino staff has been the heart of our acclaimed service. Holland America Line people pride themselves in exceeding your expectations. And because you sail in a gracious, "tipping not required" tradition, our unconditional "five-star" service is provided genuinely.
Social Hosts
A cadre of selected gentlemen hosts will be on board to provide single ladies with company for dinner, dancing, excursions ashore or perhaps some relaxed conversation.
Now Is Your Time
Time to slip away from your everyday world - to the world of Holland America Line. Time to revel in the attention that you've earned and to immerse yourself in the perfect beauty of an exotic paradise. Let us take you on the journey of your dreams. To a magical place where you are the center of the world.
At Konals Place of Refuge, you'll see where warriors once found their sanctuary.
Hilo, Hawaii
Brimming with Hawaiian tradition, Hilo takes you back to an earlier island culture. The town will charm you with its quaint buildings and unique shopping. Stroll the shops and galleries, have a milkshake and burger at a 50's soda fountain or watch children fly kites in the sunny breezes. Hilo is the flower capital of Hawaii, and gardens and blossoms are everywhere. Visit the 30-acre Queen Lili' uokalani Gardens, home to the Japanese Yedo Garden. A must-see is Nani Mau Gardens, a collection of 20 acres of botanical gardens with 100 varieties of tropical fruit trees and more than 2,000 varieties of ginger, orchids and anthuriums. Travel through lush tropical forests to Volcanoes National Park, where you'll have the rare opportunity to step up to the molten lava flows of the world's largest volcano - the notoriously temperamental Kilauea. From Volcano House, you can view the spectacular Kilauea Crater. Two-and-a-half miles long, two miles wide and 400 feet deep, the crater is the legendary home of Pele, the goddess of fire.
And on Hawaii's Big Island, there's a rare opportunity to observe the flow of molten lava at Kilauea Volcano.
Honolulu, Oahu
Hawaii's world-famous capital and home of Waikiki beach. Take a stroll and catch some rays or take advantage of the activities here. Ride the waves in an outrigger canoe, learn to surf or visit the Waikiki Aquarium. Climb to the summit of Diamond Head for a panoramic view, or take high tea at the Royal Hawaiian hotel. The shopping on Kalakaua Avenue is exceptional. Other fascinating sights here include the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Punchbowl Crater. You can visit Chinatown and see Iolani Palace - the only official royal residence on U.S. soil. The 96-year-old Bishop Museum tells the history and culture of the South Pacific, and The Polynesian Cultural Center provides an overview of Hawaii and the people who first discovered it.
Perhaps the most famous beach in the world - Honolulu's Waikiki Beach
Kona, Hawaii
Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island's west side, is near the birthplace of King Kamehameha and once the playground for Hawaii's royalty. Now it is home to world-famous big-game fishing and the annual Ironman Triathalon. Take the opportunity for a historical city tour or an allday scenic drive to visit the Kona coffee plantations and macadamia nut orchards. On the shores of Kealakekua Bay, you'll see the spot where Captain James Cook lost his life in 1779. Visit Parker Ranch, with its quarter of a million acres, the largest single owner cattle ranch in the United States. And at Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, "The City of Refuge," you can visit what was once a sanctuary for defeated warriors, ringed by a high lava rock wall over 1,000 feet long. You'll see a collection of wooden ki'i carvings, ancient temples and heiau, restored to give you a glimpse of an earlier Hawaii.
Lahaina, Maui
In the nineteenth century, Lahaina Town was the whaling capital of the world. Today, the former ship's chandlers along Front Street in this picturesque seaport house quaint boutiques and enticing restaurants. The brig Carthaginian is moored here, and you can tour the Baldwin Museum. During April, watch for majestic humpback whales just off shore. Travel for a closer look to the dramatic geological formation called Iao Needle, or visit Haleakala, Maui's largest volcanic peak, which soars to over 10,000 feet and contains a crater so vast that it could swallow Manhattan from Wall Street to Spanish Harlem - skyscrapers and all. Called the "House of the Sun," it was from this crater that legend says the god Maui lassoed the sun and stored its rays within the mountain for the farmers and fishermen to have as they needed.
Your vessel will call on Maui at the once-rowdy Pacific whaling fleet port ot Lahaina - now serene and picturesque
Nawiliwili, Kauai
With its time-etched mountains and cascading waterfalls, lush greenery and sun-drenched beaches, you'll see why Kauai, of all Hawaii's gems, is called "The Garden Isle." Kauai is a quiet and peaceful island where the buildings grow no higher than the coconut trees. From the rim of Waimea Canyon, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," you can view the Waimea River running 2,500 feet below. Visit Hanapepe, Kauai's "biggest little city" and the location for the filming of the movie "The Thorn Birds." See Waimea, where Captain Cook first landed in Hawaii in 1778, and don't miss the opportunity to take a romantic boat cruise to the famous Fern Grotto - one of the world's most popular wedding sites. Along the north shore of Kauai is the breathtaking Na Pali Coast, unmarred by roads and unapproachable, except by foot-trail, helicopter or sea. You'll get an awesome view from the decks of the Statendam as we sail by.
